The Gold Hill hotel was founded sometime in the late 1850's or early 1860's as "The Riesen House", the exact date is uncertain. What is known is that the winter of 1861/1862 there were big floods all over northern California and Nevada. Melting snow and unprecedented rains filled all the ravines and canyons with torrents of water. On 27 Jan. 1862 the Alta California quoted an article from the Territorial Enterprise of 13 Jan. 1862 "...the southwest and southeast corners of the Risen (sic) House, a fine structure, have fallen, but the main part of the building remained firm."
The building was purchased by HM Vesey sometime after the flood and the hotel was renamed "Vesey's Hotel". The town of Virginia City became a mining boomtown for gold and silver, the population reached over 40,000. As the mines dried up, the workers left and by the 1930s only a few hundred people remained. The hotel eventually was renamed the Gold Hill Hotel and fell into disrepair. In 1986, the entire hotel was restored and renovated.
The hotel is haunted by several apparitions who appear on second floor hallway and bathroom. Gold Hill Hotel is renowned locally as a haven for supernatural occurrences, many people have seen strange thing while staying there.
