On May 7, 1864, Elenora French of Lincolnville accompanied her older sister and some of her sister's friends to the top of Mt. Megunticook, where she fell to her death. A few years later a cross was erected on the site, and one has been maintained there ever since. The rumors say she fell chasing her favorite pink hat after it was blown from her head. She died later that night at her home. She did not have a single brokenbone after falling over 300 feet. She died of internal injuries. Today there is a large white cross marking where she fell and died. Some say that when looking below on the anniversary of her death you can se her pretty pink hat good as new floating to the ground below, and if you're quiet enough, you can hear her screaming as she falls.
